Food in Peru

The Peruvians cultivated maize centuries ago and it is a national staple. They apparently have a few hundred varieties of maize. For example this choclo, a common snack, which is basically corn on the cob eaten with cheese. The corn (pieces?) are twice as big as the usual ones in Malaysia but is less sweet.Another example: fried corn served with a sprinkling of salt. This is served as a snack before or after a mealYL's favourite food in Peru - a corn snackCeviche is the national dish of Peru. I call it pseudo-sushi. Raw pieces of fish and seafood are "cooked" in lime juice.Alpaca meat, another staple especially in the highlands. The alpaca is a relative of the llama and is reared by many farmers because it provides wool for clothing, meat and helps to transport items. The Chinese are everywhere, including Peru! Chinese food (chifa) is apparently very popular in Lima.
Polla ala brassa, or spit-roasted chicken. A local favourite which is tasty and affordable.

Tafy with Inka Cola (the local equivalent of Coca Cola) and Cusquena beer. Tafy has gone MIA since Sophie's birth, but he finally re-emerged on this trip. Unfortunately, we could not take him with us on the Inca Trail trek (weight limitations) or Lake Titicaca (space limitations), so he pretty much came out only in Lima... :P
