Reviving the blog

I'm baaaaack!

After a 3-year hiatus, I've decided to dust off the rusty Blogger site and restart it.  It has been an eventful 3 years where we continued our travels whenever work *and* school schedules allowed us.  Among other things, we:
  • fawned over New Zealand's South Island picture-perfect, postcard-worthy-without-even-trying,  scenery (we probably stopped the car every 2km to take a photo)
  • marvelled at Bali's natural and cultural heritage at Ubud
  • drove up to Kuantan from Singapore along the old trunk roads, exploring the forgotten and simple joys of small towns in Malaysia (like buying wild bananas off a stall set up along the highway)
  • connected with family in Shantou, Guangzhou, and tried to wrangle entry to a TVB station programme recording in Hong Kong with a sob story (it didn't work :( )
  • ticked off another UNESCO World Heritage Site at Borobudur & Prambanan in Yogyakarta (but our favourite activity was the jeep ride up Gunung Merapi, the volcano!)
  • sought refuge from the haze and heat at Janda Baik, a cool mountain resort just outside of Kuala Lumpur (it did not work)
  • searched for snow in Kanazawa and Nagano in Japan (partial success)
  • traced the Soong's Hakka roots in Meixian, Guangzhou (not directly related to the famous Soong scholar of the 18th century, unfortunately)
  • escaped from the kids in Ho Chi Minh City (only to fall flat on our stomachs due to food poisoning, or more likely, over-eating)
  • stayed on a houseboat for 3 nights while exploring the Murray River near Perth, Australia (and broke the boat since we thought we knew best)
  • cooked up a storm in Bangkok (seriously the best Thai food I've ever tasted)
  • walked from Kyoto to Tokyo over 5 days (only partially true; we only walked 10% of the 450km)
While I prepare an in-depth account of our most recent Japan trip, here are some photos to whet your appetite for what's coming up:

Autumn colours were everywhere....but so were people :(
